Boat Trip to Capri with Private Day Tours

. April 16, 2014 .

I thought I’d start my Sorrento posts with my favourite day out there, our boat trip to Capri with Private Day Tours. But this wasn’t just any boat trip, with a tour around the island and along the Sorrento coast I’ve been left with magical memories I’ll never forget.
Private Day Tours is by Gianluca Savarese, who himself picked us up from our hotel the morning of our tour. Driving through Sorrento he suggested places we visit whilst we were in town, making our day such a lovely personable experience form the start. I would have loved to explore more of Sorrento with Gianluca, a life-long resident of Sorrento he’s so knowledgeable about the area and was full of interesting facts and histories. We even stopped off at his local bakery en route (which did the most incredible nutella croissants) for a bit of breakfast!

Arriving at the port in Piano di Sorrento we were introduced to Marcella, who looked after us for the rest of the day. Our typical Sorrentian style boat was gorgeous, with immaculate decking and white leather seats positioned at the front for the very best view. Setting off out of the port we got off to an amazing start, out along the coast we spotted a school of dolphins, I love them so it was such a lovely moment for  me and we were only two minutes in. Next stop was the beautiful old fishing village if Sorrento to pick up the rest of the guests, then it was all aboard to Capri! But not without a few sights to see along the way…

We stopped at Bagni Regina Giovanna, the ancient ruins of a Roman villa, complete with a natural lagoon pool that we could just see through a small archway on the boat. It was great to hear the history of this form Marcella, she told us how a queen used to bathe in the waters and how it’s now know as ‘The Queen’s Baths.’ Dave and were so intrigued we sought it out the next day, it’s such a stunning and secluded place. Next up was the natural spring coming out of the coastline’s cliff edge and into the sea. They backed the boat up close to it and Dave was brave enough to go under! It was so cool to watch and we were all given a sip of the water too.

We did a lap of the whole Island before getting off. The boat made stops in incredible places, to have such a knowledgeable insight from our guide was amazing. We learned something new on every corner making the experience even more memorable. We even had a chance to stop off and go inside the blue grottos, a cave which Capri is famous for. You can see in the photo above how the sunlight reflects through the water and illuminates the water and cave, being inside it was surreal and magical. The sea surrounding the island has such stunning hues, from emerald green to pale aqua, the water is so inviting you wont be able to resist jumping in.

Before coming into the Capri marina we were given some lovely snacks and drinks whilst Marcella told us where we should visit on the Island. We were being so well looked after it was hard to leave our boat, but I was excited to explore Capri. We were given a generous four hours before travelling back to Sorrento, and it’s amazing how much we got done in that time. I’ll be doing a post on Capri itself in full, but in short We took the cable car up to the town and visited the Gardens of Augustus, The Capri Perfumery, Ana Capri, Marina Grande beach and even had time to share a bottle of Pino.

On our return the boat seemed to fly above the aqua-blue waves, the journey back to Sorrento was equally as beautiful. We even enjoyed a cheeky shot (or two) of Lemoncello courtesy of the crew. It was probably one of the best day trips I’ve ever had, everything went perfectly and we felt so looked after by Gianluca and Marcella, an amazing Italian welcome. I can’t thank them enough for such a wonderful day and such impeccable service.

If you visit Sorrento or the Amalfi coast be sure to book yourself in with Gianluca and his team Private Day Tours, he’ll be sure to look after you and make your trip run ever so smoothly, and you’ll even learn a lot about the area on the way. It's the only way to see the area!
